Is it safe to leave them after taking out the stitches? Let's talk about the fixation plates, first. The plates are made out of titanium as they fix the moved bones after two jaw surgery. Titanium can be also used to make for artificial bones, so it's safe if not removed. But, if you worry about them showing in the x-ray, you may consider about getting them removed. When is the best time to remove them? It's usually recommended after 6 months~1 year the surgery. After 1 year isn't recommended as the surrounding soft tissue is difficult to move after they're settled. No more swelling? There will be a bit swelling, but it won't be severe as two jaw surgery.
