Director Lee Jin-soo's Essay 41 - The Secret of Beautiful Profile Unfamiliar to the General Public (feat: Height Difference of Lips)

Jaw protrusion refers to a protruding lower jaw that makes the profile resemble a shovel. Typically, when the lower jaw develops, the chin at the end of the lower jaw also develops, resulting in a protruding chin typical of a shovel jaw.

The extent of chin protrusion is determined by comparing how much the chin protrudes compared to the lower lip when viewed from the side. Interestingly, when analyzing shovel jaws, you can discover a surprising fact. As mentioned earlier, while there are cases where the chin protrudes significantly, there are also many cases where it does not. It's not always the case that the chin protrudes just because the lower jaw is already developed. Sometimes, it might appear that the chin protrudes due to its position relative to the already protruding lower jaw, but in reality, the chin itself may not protrude more than average.

So, how can we determine whether it's a shovel jaw or not, if not solely based on chin development?

The answer lies in the area just below the lower lip and slightly below it. If this area protrudes when viewed from the side, it's a shovel jaw; if not, it's not a shovel jaw.

For example, there was a patient who visited because they wanted to correct their shovel jaw shape. I told them that they needed orthognathic surgery to correct the shovel jaw shape. Just like most people, they were scared upon hearing about orthognathic surgery. So, they went to another clinic for consultation, and there, they were told that a genioplasty, a part of facial contouring surgery, could solve the shovel jaw shape by moving the chin backward. Despite their fear of orthognathic surgery, they were reassured by the idea of a much simpler genioplasty, so they immediately underwent the surgery.

However, even though the developed chin had reduced, they still felt that the shovel jaw sensation was not resolved and returned to me. Why did this happen?

It's because of the position of the area just below the lower lip. Chin surgery alone doesn't change the position of this area. The shovel jaw shape is created because the area just below the lower lip and below it protrudes forward. Since only the chin was operated on, the shovel jaw shape wasn't eliminated.

It was only then that they understood the necessity of orthognathic surgery and underwent it belatedly. Naturally, after orthognathic surgery, the area just below the lower lip and below it moved backward, completely correcting the shovel jaw shape, and only then could they be satisfied with the change in their facial shape.

From this, we can discover the secret of a beautiful profile unfamiliar to the general public.

In a beautiful profile, there is a height difference between the upper lip and the lower lip. A beautiful profile is achieved when the upper lip is in front and the lower lip is behind. Although it's a very simple fact, when analyzing facial shapes, it yields quite significant results.

When you want to correct the shovel jaw sensation, remember to correct the feeling of the lower lip protruding, rather than just focusing on the protrusion of the chin!
