Plastic Surgery Essay of Dr. Jinsoo Lee:

The rich get richer and the poor get poorer

Facial contouring and two jaw surgeries that I specialize in are surgeries to treat the skeleton in the face. It is to change the face shape by trimming the basic skeleton in the face.

In order for my facial surgery to be visible, the soft tissue covering the skeleton must reflect the changes in the facial bone. Therefore, the better the degree of soft tissue reflection, the better the result of facial bone surgery. The main components of soft tissues are the tissues on the bones which are in order from the outside; skin, subcutaneous fat, muscle and so on. Since we usually see skin when we look from the outside, we will call soft tissue as skin from now on.

There are two conditions for skin that reflects the results of facial bone surgery.
First, it should be thin. Exactly, it means that the subcutaneous fat is thin. If it is thick, it will be reflected on the surface less even if the skeleton is changed by bone surgery. In comparison with a sculpting, even though sculpture is perfectly well built but a thick winter comforter is covered. Basically, when a person does not have fat on the face (skin and bone are attached), he/she is a great candidate for the bone surgery.

Secondly, the elasticity should be good. The bone surgery I perform is surgery mostly to reduce the volume of the facial bones (to make the face smaller). If there is no elasticity on the skin, this reduced volume will not be able to cope with and it will droop. In comparison with wrapping food or articles, if you do not pull the wrapping paper well and wrap the article or the food tightly, the wrapping paper will get wrinkled everywhere. Pulling well and packing tightly will make the things and food look much better. It is a good elasticity skin that is usually expressed as tangible. It is better to have a slightly firmer skin than a soft feel. At first glance, the skin looking clean and smooth seems good skin type. The skin so called ‘watery skin’ is easy to lose elasticity after bone surgery and might seem droopy. This is why aged skin is less suitable for bone surgery as the skin becomes less elastic. The elasticity of the pre-operative condition is important, which is the change in the elasticity of the natural skin based on age and daily care.

In conclusion, the effect of bone surgery is better when the skin is thin and elastic. However, if you think carefully, if the skin condition before surgery is good as mentioned, it is more likely to be more beautiful than when it is not. It is also said that the effect of surgery is better when someone is originally pretty. Unfortunately, this means the rich get richer and the poor get poorer in plastic surgery.

Fortunately, various treatments and operations are being developed to make skin thin and elastic, to improve such a pitiable situation (the rich get richer and the poor get poorer), and some results are being proved. It is one of the most active research and new attempts at this time. I will continue to do my best for further improvement of this state (the poor get poorer).
