Bone gender

You can generally tell the gender looking at the face of a person. This isn’t something that was particularly learned, one can just tell without giving it much thought. There are certainly men with pretty faces that appear feminine, as there are women with unwomanly faces that look more masculine.

Why do you think that is? As I mainly deal with the face shape, I will elaborate on the characteristics of male vs. female faces mainly in terms of the face shape. I think you’ll find it interesting to look at the faces of those around you from a gender vantage after reading this blog.

Firstly, it is a matter of whether the facial bones are prominent or whether it’s facial fat. A harmonious face shape is one in which facial bones and fat are well balanced. More prominent bones make a face appear masculine while more prominent fat makes one appear feminine. In other words, little facial fat with prominent bones appears masculine. On the other hand, the bones show little to none on feminine faces. As there is little bone prominence in young faces as well, feminine faces generally appear younger. Which is why, when young women lose weight or cheek fat is lost with age, one appears older and more masculine.

The second issue is the size of the lower face. The name of the general that appeared before in an animation featuring ants was ‘Mandible,’ which means lower jaw. ‘Mandible’ being the name of a gallant general implies significant association of the degree of jaw development with masculinity. A large lower jaw and developed jawline gives a masculine feel. On the other hand, a small lower jaw making the lower face small and slim has a feminine feel. A large lower face can make one look older while a small lower face can appear younger.

The third consideration is the size of the midface area. If this midface region is large (generally more often expressed as long), the nose appears long as a result. Which, in turn, makes one appear masculine and older looking as well. A short midface is characteristic of faces that appear feminine and younger looking. Generally, if the nose looks long after rhinoplasty, this is why the face appears older as well.

Lastly, there’s the size and roundness of the forehead. A large, rounded forehead appears feminine while a narrow, sunken one looks masculine. In particular, if the frontal sinus of the skull is developed in men, the brow bones appear prominent and the thickness of this brow ridge is largely correlated to how masculine one appears.

As explained above, prominent facial bones makes one appear older and masculine, and surgery performed to reduce such prominent facial bones is called facial contouring. Reducing protruding cheeks, jawbones or chin bone will naturally alleviate the feeling that there is lack of facial fat, giving one a softer impression with a younger looking and more feminine face. For such reasons, facial contouring surgery can be called youthifying surgery. Take a look at yourself in the mirror. Do you notice facial bones or fat?
