Traceless: Unable to detect without a trace as though nothing was enhanced or altered.
There are two things people want to get out of surgery. One is to see significant results from surgery and the other is that no one knows they’ve ever had surgery albeit substantial results.
It is difficult to hide the fact one has had surgery done for the most common surgeries like double eyelid surgery or nose raising surgery. This is because these are highly visible areas, and the difference is noticeable. Being the most common, we encounter these cases of surgery the most. We often see self-proclaimed plastic surgery experts around us who claim to be able to uncannily detect whether someone has had surgery or not.
However, it’s another story for the field of facial contouring and orthognathic surgery that I usually perform. Facial contouring and orthognathic surgery are the representative facial bone surgeries. Facial contouring surgery changes the contour of the face, and generally includes cheekbone surgery, (square) jaw surgery, and chin surgery. Orthognathic surgery repositions the upper and lower jawbones. This is done to correct malocclusion or to resolve issues with the facial shape due to abnormally positioned jaws.
Facial bone surgery is usually performed through incisions in the mouth, leaving little or very small external scars that are hardly visible. So, it is hard to tell whether surgery was performed just from incision scars. It is also very difficult to discern whether someone has undergone facial bone surgery just from looking at the face alone after surgery. Even someone who knew the person before might not know whether that person has had surgery. Because people don’t remember other people’s facial contours exactly, they can’t really discern any changes in the contour even if it has changed, only getting the feeling that the contour has changed. Facial bone surgery is the most likely to be indiscernible that surgery was done. In a word, traceless surgery is possible. It can satisfy the two things that people want out of plastic surgery.
There are some prerequisites for traceless surgery. The results of surgery must appear natural. Often times, natural plastic surgery is misunderstood as surgery with minimal change, but natural does not indicate a small amount of change, rather that the altered shape does not appear awkward and seems like the original shape.
For example, square jaw surgery in the past resulted in a very awkward jawline if each area of the lower jaw was cut a lot. The shape of a jaw without an angle is coined a ‘dog jaw' because it resembles that of a dog. As for cheekbone surgery, the cheekbone area will look sunken if too much bone is reduced, making one look awkward and inanimate. T-osteotomy (surgically narrowing the chin), the most common chin surgery these days, can also end up too sharp and strangely shaped if excessively done. Facial bone surgery won’t be traceless if surgery is performed in such manner. The results of surgery should be as close as possible to the original shape for facial bone surgery to be natural and traceless.
“I’m told a lot that my face shape has become natural and attractive after facial bone surgery." These are the words I enjoying hearing most in my line of work.
