Bone gender (Part II)

I had written about bone gender in a previous posting. It was about the facial shape made of facial bones having gender traits. This time, I’ll be getting into the gender traits of facial bones themselves.

People generally seem to consider facial bone surgery very complicated or difficult. Facial contouring surgery, which mainly trims the outer contour of the face, and orthognathic surgery, which changes the position of the upper and lower jaws, including the teeth, are the representative facial bone surgeries. Most of these surgeries are performed through the mucosa membrane inside the mouth, so you can barely see any scars on the exterior.

Surgery starts with an incision in the mucous membrane of the mouth, followed by detachment. Detachment is the separation of the periosteum from the facial bone. The periosteum is a membrane that wraps around the bone and is attached to the bone. If you don't know what this is, think about the ribs you eat. When you bite into the meat on ribs, you know the tough stuff on the meat? That's the periosteum.

If the meat is soft, the membrane falls off the ribs easily, but if the meat is tough, the membrane doesn't come off well.

Surgery is convenient when the periosteum peels off the bone well. When separating the periosteum from the facial bone, it is done solely with the strength in the hand, so if it’s hard to separate, it takes a toll on the hand. If it’s really hard to peel off, it takes all the strength out of your hand, to the extent you have to rest it for a while after peeling. However, the periosteum can’t be peeled off recklessly with excessive force and needs to be preserved as much as possible to reduce overall bleeding during and after surgery as well as the swelling and pain after surgery. It takes a lot of time and effort to remove a substance that’s hard to peel off as carefully as possible.

The reason why they don’t separate well is obviously because the two are strongly adhered. This bond also contains blood vessels, so if it is difficult to separate, the surface of the bone after peeling will bleed a lot. Since not all blood flow can be stopped each and every time, there is a lot of bleeding during and after surgery, and severe bruising and swelling results.

Let's go back to eating galbi. It is said that beef ribs from cows are soft. Soft meat falls off the bone easily. What’s interesting is that facial bone surgery is generally less difficult for women on average. This is because the outer membrane is easy to peel off. Conversely, male facial bones are more difficult. As I explained above, theirs result in more bleeding and swelling. What’s fascinating is that among men, those who look delicate like women have bone membranes that peel off easily like female facial bones while among women, those who look rugged like men have hard to separate membranes like that of men.

If the cost of surgery were determined based on the difficulty of surgery (not the complexity but the level of labor), it would cost more for men. The hospital where I work doesn’t charge differently based on gender but I have heard there are places where facial bone surgery is more expensive for men. Perhaps these hospitals charge differently because of what I mentioned earlier?

Nowadays, men are showing increasingly higher interest in their appearance. The male grooming segment interested in their fashion and appearance is on the rise and investing generously. The proportion of men having plastic surgery also continues to rise. The same is true for facial bone surgery with a remarkable increase in proportion of men.

I think I need to strengthen my grip to meet the changing rate in gender having surgery. I should buy a hand grip on my way home today.
