How to resolve protruding eyebrow bones?

The faces of men and women can be distinguished by various features, and one significant characteristic is the degree of development of the eyebrow bones. the protrusion of eyeborn bones is a distinctive feature of men when they are well-developed.

In anatomical terms, this area is called the supraorbital ridge, commonly referred to as the eyebrow bone in this text, referring to the bone in the area where the eyebrows are located. In the case of women, when the eyebrow bones are developed, they may appear more like men, leading to a desire for correction. Even in men, if the eyebrow bones protrude excessively, it can give a strong impression, prompting a desire for correction.

When the space between the eyes and the forehead is significantly developed,

If the protrusion of the eyebrow bones is not serve, there are methods to cover the relatively flat area above the eyebrow bones, This can be achieved through techniques such as fat grafting and the use of fillers. However, when the protrusion of the eyebrow bones is pronounced, these covering methods have limitations. In such cases, a procedure known as eyebrow bone reduction surgery is performed to reduce the eyebrow bones themselves.

It is commonly thought that if the eyebrow bones protrude significantly, it is because the bones are thick, but in reality, it is not the thickness of the bones; rather, it is the forward projection of relatively thin bones that creates the appearance of protruding eyebrow bones. This shape is due to a structure called the frontal sinus, which is a type of paranasal sinus around the nose.

When the frontal sinus enlarges, the corresponding part of the frontal sinus lid comes forward. In the face, this area extends from between the eyebrows to the middle of the eyebrows, and this part protrudes forward. If the protrusion of the eyebrow bones is not severe, and the bones corresponding to the frontal sinus lid are thick, a relatively simple method of reshaping the bones can be used. However, in most cases where this level of correction is sufficient, procedures such as fat grafting or fillers can cover the issue, and surgical reshaping is not commonly performed.

Since the issue is not thick eyelids but rather the forward projection causing severe protrusion, the solution involves pushing back the lid of the forward-projecting frontal sinus. This is achieved by using the method of osteotomy to cut out the bones corresponding to the frontal sinus lid, removing the parts where the bones touch, and then moving them backward to fix them in place.

In practice, the shape of the frontal sinus varies, the degree of development varies, and the range of the frontal sinus is different for each case. Therefore, finding the optimal surgical method for each case is crucial.

The part of the bone corresponding to the lid of the frontal sinus does not appear to be particularly thick but is noticeably protruded forward. On the right, a case is shown where the bone corresponding to the lid of the frontal sinus was fixed by moving it backward using frontal bone reduction surgery. It can be observed that the protrusion of the eyebrow bone has significantly improved.

Eyebrow bone reduction surgery utilizes a scalp incision approximately 5cm behind the forehead. In cases where forehead reduction is also necessary, the incision for forehead reduction can be used for eyebrow bone reduction surgery. Since the skin of the forehead is already exposed during the surgery, forehead augmentation can be performed simultaneously if needed.

Satisfaction with eyebrow bone reduction surgery is generally high because it effectively improves the protrusion of the eyebrow bone. As mentioned earlier, the structure of the frontal sinus varies from person to person, so it is crucial to have a good understanding of anatomical structures and seek a surgeon with ample experience in facial bone surgery.
