Dr. Lee Jin-soo's Plastic Surgery Essay 37 - What Beauty Means to a Plastic Surgeon? (feat. Art Appreciation)

I am a plastic surgery specialist.

I perform plastic surgeries, particularly focusing on facial bone surgeries such as facial contouring and jaw surgeries. The general process of conducting plastic surgery is as follows: A patient visits the hospital with dissatisfaction about their appearance, expresses their concerns, and I, as the surgeon, identify the issues. Subsequently, a surgical plan is devised to address these concerns, and after obtaining the patient's consent, the planned surgery is executed.

During my training as a plastic surgeon, my initial emphasis was on honing surgical techniques to perform surgeries skillfully. As proficiency in surgical skills improved, I shifted my focus towards meticulous surgical planning. Just as architectural designs are crucial in construction, a well-devised surgical plan is imperative for enhancing the overall quality of the surgery. While refined surgical skills contribute to the quality within the set plan, an excellent surgical plan elevates the overall standard of the surgery.

When a patient expresses dissatisfaction with their appearance, the critical first step in the surgical planning process is identifying the difference between the patient's appearance and the concept of a beautiful face. To undertake this process, I need to have a set notion of what constitutes a beautiful face. In essence, my understanding of beauty forms the foundation of the quality of the plastic surgery I perform.

Beauty can be perceived from two main perspectives. First, there are timeless aspects of beauty that remain unchanged over extended periods. This includes commonalities between historical beauties and modern ones, and extensive research and numerical data exist in this regard.

Secondly, there are features associated with the contemporary trends of beautiful faces prevalent in modern society. Beauty has certain trends, and recognizing and understanding these trends is crucial. Capturing the trends in beauty and understanding the reasons behind them helps in determining whether these trends are transient or likely to persist for an extended period. As an example, the trend of a youthful appearance in modern beauty standards is discussed, emphasizing the societal need for individuals to look youthful in an aging society.

While there are formal elements of beauty that can be learned through study, the emotional aspect of beauty, which involves intuitively feeling beauty, is equally significant. I believe that art appreciation plays a substantial role in enhancing the emotional response to beauty.

Artworks often depict individuals over extended periods, allowing us to observe the faces of people from different eras. Art provides a unique visual representation of faces before the advent of photography. Even paintings without the presence of faces can evoke emotional responses to beauty. Appreciating beautiful artworks contributes to developing an emotional reaction to beauty.

Engaging in art appreciation also helps alleviate the extreme tension that comes with performing surgery, easing the mental stress accumulated during the procedure. As a plastic surgeon, incorporating art appreciation into my life has become a valuable source of mental well-being, and I often recommend it to friends as a beneficial hobby. To those reading this, why not consider visiting an art museum this weekend?
